Carlos Urzua

Professor Carlos M. Urzúa is a UW-Madison alumnus (PhD in Economics, 1986). He was the Secretary of Finance for the Mexico City government (2000-2003), and the Secretary of the Treasury for the Mexican Republic (2018-2019). He is currently Professor of Economics at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

He was born in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, and a master's degree from CINVESTAV. Urzúa began his teaching career at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, State of Mexico campus, at the age of 22. He was an assistant professor in the Economics Department at Georgetown University (1986-1988), a visiting assistant professor in the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University (1988-1990), and a professor in the Economics Department at the Colegio de México (1989-2000). Later, he was the head of the Graduate School for Public Administration at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico City campus (2003-2013). He has also been a visiting professor at other Mexican and international universities and is an award-winning poet.

Urzúa is a high-ranking member of the National Researcher System of Mexico since 2004, and of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 2007.
