Tinker Visiting Professor
Márcio Garcia holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University (1991), a master's degree in Economics from Stanford University (1990) and PUC-Rio (1987), and a degree in Production Engineering from the School of Engineering at UFRJ (1982). He is a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at PUC-Rio, having previously headed the Department of Economics (1999-2002), coordinated the graduate programs (1997-2000), and coordinated the undergraduate programs (1991-1993). His research interests include international finance (open macroeconomics) and monetary and fiscal economics, focusing on the following topics: capital flows and controls, exchange rates, foreign exchange interventions, inflation, monetary policy, public debt, banking economics, and the financial system.
In 2013, he was a visiting scholar at the Sloan School of Management at MIT and the NBER, with a postdoctoral fellowship from CNPq. In 2014, he was a Tinker Visiting Professor at Stanford. In 2002/3, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford Economics Department. He also visited the Economics Department of the University of Chicago (USA), the Paris School of Economics (then DELTA), and the University of Evry-Val-D´Esssone in France. His article "FX interventions in Brazil: a synthetic control approach," published in 2017 in the Journal of International Economics, won the Haralambos Simeonidis Award for best article from ANPEC. He is a member of the Bellagio Group, a researcher at CNPq, and a Nosso Estado Scientist at FAPERJ where he coordinates the Economics area. He writes monthly for the newspaper Valor Econômico. He has provided consultancy to several national and international institutions, including the World Bank, IDB, CEPAL, IMF, Central Bank of Brazil, BNDES, Banco do Brasil, B3, Banco BBM, Banco Icatu, ANBIMA, NEO Investimentos and Fininvest. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Banrisul.
