Tinker Visiting Professor
Mauricio Fontes is Professor of Soil Science at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Brazil, where he has taught and conducted research for more than 40 years. He has extensive experience in teaching undergraduate courses in soil genesis and graduate courses in soil mineralogy and soil chemistry. He conducts research in various fields of Pedology with emphasis on highly weathered soils and heavy metals in soils, waters and plants, within the context of environmental pollution. For more than a decade now, he has been working with soil in the Amazon. He graduated in Agronomy and received his Master’s degree in Soil Fertility at Universidade Federal de Viçosa. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry and Mineralogy of Soils at North Carolina State University.
During his stay at UW-Madison, in the spring of 2020, Professor Fontes will teach the course: “Soils of the Amazon Region: Genesis and Mineralogy”.
