Tinker Visiting Professor

Haydée Carrasco is an associate professor of linguistics at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro in Mexico and a member of Mexico’s National Council of Science. She is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on neurolinguistics and bilingualism in different contexts of language contact in Mexico. Her current research projects include the cognitive and neural bases of language processing of Mexican indigenous languages and Spanish vernaculars.
Her spring 2026 seminar, Multilingualism and Interculturality in Mexico, will examine the linguistic and cultural diversity in Mexico. Focusing primarily on how Mexican native languages and colonial heritage have left an indelible mark on modern Spanish varieties spoken in Mexico and in diverse cultural expressions throughout the territory. This course will explore aspects such as language contact and multilingualism, language preservation, language politics, and the role of language in identity and culture. This course should give the students a new perspective on how linguistic diversity represents a living heritage that has endured for centuries in Mexican society and culture.
