Tinker Visiting Professor
Orlando Deavila Pertuz is an assistant professor at the International Institute of Caribbean Studies at the Universidad de Cartagena (Colombia). He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Connecticut. His research interests include urban history, the history of racial relations in contemporary Colombia, and the history of tourism development. He is currently working on a book dealing with the intersection between race and space in the remaking of Cartagena as an international tourist destination during the twentieth century. He has written academic articles for several books and international scientific journals.
He has received research and travel grants from the Observatorio del Caribe Colombiano, the Instituto Francés de Estudios Andinos, and Vanderbilt University. He received an honorable mention for the Michael Katz Award for Best Dissertation in Urban History from the Urban History Association in 2019. He is working on a digital humanities project funded by the Caribbean Digital Scholarship Collective to create a digital community archive about female and Black leadership in Cartagena during the twentieth century.
