Tinker Visiting Professor

Adriana Ángel

Adriana Ángel is a specialist in rhetoric and communication in the Americas. Her research examines the role of rhetoric in implementing and maintaining democratic political structures in countries throughout Latin America. Under this umbrella, her work explores how discourse and phenomena such as corruption, neoliberalism, and decoloniality shape the form democracy can take. Dr. Ángel earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Ohio University, was a Fulbright recipient, and is recognized as a Senior Researcher by the Colombian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. She is currently a professor at the Universidad de Manizales (Colombia) and has also held positions at the Universidad de la Sabana in Bogotá, Colombia. She co-edited the book Rhetorics of Democracy in the Americas (2021) and is the author of over 30 book chapters and articles that appeared in important peer-reviewed publications, including Communication Theory, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Southern Journal of Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, and Communication and Social Change. In these outlets, she examines the impact of political campaigns and social movements addressing corruption, fracking, sustainability, and health on people’s daily realities in various Latin American contexts. Her work is also at the cutting edge of conversations about decoloniality as scholars explore what it means to do politics differently.
