Julio Elías

Julio Elías is a Professor in the Department of Economics and Business School at Universidad del CEMA (UCEMA) in Argentina. He serves as the Executive Director of the UChicago/UCEMA Joint Initiative for Latin American Experimental Economics (JILAEE) and is the Director of UCEMA’s M.A. program in economics and the Center for Creativity Economics.

Dr. Elías earned his B.A. from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina in 1996 and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 2005. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Becker Friedman Institute and a Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago, the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he was also an Assistant Professor.

His research focuses on organ donation, exploring financial incentives and strategies to alleviate organ shortages and associated moral aspects. In collaboration with Gary Becker of the University of Chicago, he has analyzed the introduction of financial incentives to increase organ donations. He has also worked with Nicola Lacetera from the University of Toronto and Mario Macis from Johns Hopkins University to develop a research agenda on the concept of repugnance surrounding monetary and other incentives for organ donors, as well as other contentious transactions and markets leading to insights into market design.

Dr. Elías also studies Creativity Economics and its relation to economic development, particularly in Latin America. He and his collaborators have investigated innovation and innovators in the Argentine wine industry and Peruvian cuisine. He has also analyzed the role of cultural identity and how celebrating local culture can differentiate products and inspire innovation.

His research has been disseminated in book chapters and journals such as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, PLOS One, and World Medical & Health Policy. It has also been covered in media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. In 2023, the University of Chicago Press issued a volume of unpublished writings of Gary Becker that Dr. Elías co-edited with his colleagues Casey B. Mulligan and Kevin M. Murphy.
