Jaime Araos

Jaime Araos’ research focuses on Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotle, topics in metaphysics and the philosophy of language, and questions about the ethics and political philosophy of democracy.

He completed his M. Phil. and B. Phil. at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and a Ph.D. at the Universidad de Navarra in Spain. He is currently a professor in the Graduate Program in Bioethics at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities and the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad of Chile where he teaches Aristotelian ethics. Previously, he taught medieval philosophy and metaphysics seminars at the Universidad de Chile and for more than 20 years was a Professor of Aristotle at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile where he led seminars at the Institute of Philosophy.

He has been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and a Visiting Professor at the Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy), Aix-Marseille Université (France), and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), among others.

He has participated in numerous national and international research projects on philosophy. He is the founder and current director of the Red Iberoamericana de Pensamiento Actual (RIPA), an international research network that includes prominent academics from top universities in Ibero-America.

He is the author of numerous papers and several books that have been translated into English, including Don't Learn Philosophy; Learn to Philosophize! (2020); Plato and Aristotle: New Perspectives on Metaphysics, Ethics and Epistemology (2019); Political Rationality, Public Virtues and Intercultural Dialogue (2016); Love of Wisdom. Studies in Metaphysics and Ethics in Honor of Professor Juan de Dios Vial Larraín (2004); and The Philosophy of Language in Aristotle (1999).
