The Selva Lacandona, one of the most biodiverse rainforests in the world, contains some of the most extensive and best-preserved remnants of lower montane rainforest in Mexico and Central America. For nearly 20 years, Natura y Ecosistemas has worked with local communities to protect ecosystem services by applying the National Program for Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). However, recent budget reductions and changing operational rules have complicated communities’ ability to enroll in the program and have hampered implementation.

Natura y Ecosistemas and program implementers and beneficiaries will assess: 1) the impact of these PES implementation challenges on outcomes such as deforestation rates and socioeconomic factors, and 2) stakeholder perceptions at national and local levels. NEM will develop recommendations to improve PES design and implementation to bolster conservation in this threatened landscape.
