Colombia is the world’s third-largest producer of coffee, and smallholder farmers dominate production. SAN will work with four specialty coffee-producing communities in the municipality of Planadas (Tolima Department) to design, refine, and pilot an alternative community-based monitoring and assurance system that can effectively measure the sustainability outcomes of landscape-level investments. SAN will partner with coffee industry representatives and local governments to build a system that sustains farming households and protect ecosystems. It will also develop data-sharing platforms to ensure that community-level decisions about landscape-level investments in the short and long term are grounded in consistent, validated information.
