Managed harvesting of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) has been promoted as an alternative development path for local communities and indigenous peoples – and a strategy for avoiding large-scale forest degradation and loss. The Brazil nut, which only grows in primary forests with a closed canopy, plays an important role in this approach. According to a recent study by PUCP and CIFOR, the failure to include gender, intercultural, and intergenerational needs and concerns in the design and assignment of NTFP concessions weakens conservation impacts and undermines the sustainable use of forest resources. This project will assess the current NTFP concession granting system and jointly develop management tools that reflect generational changes and incorporate gender and interculturality into public policy.
