Ecuador protects 23 percent of its territory in national parks and other state-mandated protected areas that preserve habitat and vital ecosystem services. Since 2008, it has also recognized the inclusion of private lands in its National System of Protected Areas to secure long-term protection for a wider array of landscapes and wildlife. However, landholders are largely unaware of this opportunity, and the Ministry of the Environment has been slow to implement this policy. Fundación Cordillera Tropical will launch an effort to 1) improve landholder understanding of the benefits of seeking such protection, and 2) develop the evidence base of the ecological value and benefits of these properties as well as the economic value they generate.
