Brazil’s 1988 constitution asserts the right to free defense for the indigent, building on a longer tradition of public defense in various parts of the country. Public Defenders’ Offices (Defensorias Públicas, or DPs) exist at the federal and state level to deliver these services in both criminal and civil contexts. Drawing on its expertise in data analysis, institutional design, and the justice sector, Transparência Brasil has designed a project to better understand the performance of state DPs in Brazil and recommend improvements.
