In addition to representing coffee producers in the Department of Caldas, the Comité Departamental de Cafeteros de Caldas (CDCC), a local chapter of the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia, is responsible for executing education policy and providing technical support and training to 991 rural public schools in Caldas. CDCC is the main executor of the Alianza, a decades-long public-private partnership that supports rural education for all 55,000 rural students in the department. CDCC has used the Escuela Nueva methodology for rural education over the past three decades and has invested considerable resources in the innovation and expansion of the model for pre-primary through university education. Its commitment to the rural schools has helped Caldas achieve international recognition for its student performance indicators, and many CDCC student-centered strategies have been adopted at a national scale. For this project, CDCC has developed three strategies for the 2021 school year that respond to needs identified by teachers and principals: 1) teacher and student training and coaching, 2) designing project-based learning modules that can be implemented in-person or at home, and 3) creating an educational toolkit that includes self-guided educational materials. Tinker funding will enable CDCC to focus additional resources and support on the 40 schools that had the most significant challenges with student engagement and learning this past school year. Through Tinker funding, CDCC will directly reach 70 teachers and 1,000 students, in addition to the 330 teachers engaged through the Alianza.
