Centro Yanapanakusun’s (“we help” in Quechua) provides comprehensive services to young people to ensure their right to education and dignified employment. Through this project, Yana will support indigenous students affected by the school closures and implement programs that align with the 2021 Peruvian national education strategy. Yana will target its programs to 1,480 middle school students (fifth through eighth grade) from nine rural schools in Cusco and 120 students from two semi-urban schools in Puno since this age group has an elevated risk of school dropout. In 2020, Yana created and distributed printed educational workbooks to these students, most of whom could not access the national platform. With Tinker funding, Yana aims to further develop these materials, creating additional student workbooks that will be distributed through partner schools, or delivered directly to student households. Yana will also produce 50 audio segments in Quechua and Spanish that complement workbooks and will be distributed via USB and WhatsApp. In support of this curriculum content, Yana will train 60 teachers from these schools to create engaging lesson plans for distance and in-person classes. Training will also focus on using audio and radio to deliver educational content, the creation of educational games, and social and emotional wellness. Complementing its teacher training will be socially distanced workshops for 800 parents from the same schools that aim to reduce student dropout and socialize the importance of education. Finally, Yana will continue its radio program, Sonqoykipi T’ikarisunchis, that has served as its main platform to reach students and families during the pandemic. Through this project, Yana will include families, students, and teachers in the creation of 700 new radio segments that emphasize the importance of education, storytelling, and culture during the pandemic. Over 100 students will receive training in broadcast journalism, and 40 will participate in the broadcasts.
