Fundación Escuela Nueva Volvamos a la Gente (FEN) seeks to improve the quality, relevance, and efficiency of education by promoting student-centered learning that fosters curiosity and critical thinking. The Escuela Nueva model is designed to support rural education in Colombia and has been adopted by over 20 other countries including Brazil, Vietnam, and the Philippines. During the pandemic, approximately 2.4 million children in rural Colombia have not had access to online learning due to lack of internet access and devices at home. However, FEN learned in a recent survey that “most rural teachers have an electronic device and stable connectivity and are willing to take part in courses that provide pertinent and useful tools, as well as ongoing support on how to facilitate distance learning.” Through this project, FEN will partner with the Ministry of Education to train around 1,000 primary school teachers from rural, multigrade schools to understand how to utilize the Escuela Nueva methodology to teach in remote and hybrid environments during the 2021 school year. FEN and independent educational experts believe the Escuela Nueva model is especially relevant during the pandemic because its student-centered approach prioritizes autonomous and personalized learning.
