In 2015, Brazil’s National Council of Justice introduced the practice of judicial custody hearings, a significant and positive development in terms of access to justice. Since 2016, the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) has played a key role in ensuring custody hearings deliver on their potential in the Brazilian context. This grant will enable APT and civil society partners to monitor and advocate for the continued use of custody hearings during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
