The University’s Center for Studies in Technology and Society (CETyS) will study and engage with the judiciary systems in five Latin American countries to assess the potential for responsible adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). With direction from CETyS, each country team will pursue a common research agenda and stakeholder engagement plan focused on 1) identifying current use of AI and related technologies, 2) assessing its potential application in the judiciary to address key needs and challenges, and 3) surfacing critical issues in the design and implementation related to fairness, accountability, and judicial independence. The project will result in a decision framework that supports judicial actors to assess their readiness, needs, and challenges concerning the adoption of AI-based technologies. The researchers will also work to identify trends and potential challenges at the regional level.
