The Population Council has a longstanding partnership with indigenous communities in Guatemala through the Abriendo Oportunidades (AO) program. The program engages parents and indigenous authorities to establish community networks of girls who meet regularly in safe spaces led by young women trained as “mentors.” This project will extend Population Council’s work to 12 new communities in the Chisec municipality, with the objective to ensure that 500 indigenous girls received educational programming and stay engaged with their local schools. The Council will partner with a local organization, Na’leb’ak, which is composed of a network of AO mentors supported by a previous Tinker grant.
